A Much Needed Win

On Thursday the Dakota College at Bottineau basketball teams took to the road and visited our neighbors up north, travelling to Winnipeg to faceoff with Canadian Mennonite University. The Jack's came back with a 97-55 win, snapping a six game losing streak and improving to 15-9.

DCB jumped out early staking a 23-11 lead after the first quarter. Jalyn Turner led the way with 7 points in the quarter. The lead was expanded in the second quarter as the Jacks busted out for 30 points, led by 7 points from Pat Robinson and Louis Williams, as well as 6 more from Turner.  The halftime lead was 53-25.

In the 3rd quarter, CMU started the scoring, however DCB would go on to outscore their hosts, 19-10 to move the lead to 72-35 after three. It was a balanced attack with all but one player scoring in the quarter. In the final frame, three three-point shots by Robinson and 6 points from Keouvion McCalop allowed the guests to win the 4th 25-20 giving us the final difference of 42.

Robinson led the way with 25 points, including five makes from beyond the arc. Jalyn Turner scored 18, while Shaq Carlyle added 14 points from the bench, and McCalop added 12. Everyone that played for the Jacks scored at least 6 points.

A Loss With Signs of Life

We traveled to Devils Lake on Sunday to face off with 2nd place Lake Region State College. We fell to the Royals by a 90-85 tally, however this was the first time in a long time that we showed the fight and ability to stick together that we have not been showing as of late. I was proud of the way the guys fought thru adversity (fouls, some amazing shot, runs).

In the first half it was a back and forth effort with 6 lead changes and 6 ties. Both teams took their share of jump shots, the majority of which in the mid-range area. At half time it was 45-36 Royals after Keouvion McCalop put back a missed shot right at the buzzer. For the first half, DCB shot 46% overall.

In the second half the Royals kept the lead between nine and twelve points for most of the half. Eventually the Jacks would gain steam and use a 12-2 run to turn a 58-48 deficit into a 60 all tie on a Jalyn Turner three from the corner. However, LRSC would respond with a 12-2 run of their own, taking a 72-62 lead with around 3:00 to go. There was still fight left in the Jacks as they would move to a press and start getting the lead cut. The lead would be down to as low as 5 the last minute before the final tally.

The Jacks were hurt in the end by a wide margin in foul calls (24-11 on fouls and 27-8 on Free-Throws). Overall, LRSC controlled the game via the offensive rebound with 22, as well as outscoring DCB 42-21 from three and the charity stripe. For the game, DCB shot 49% overall, and hit 6-19 from three, and only 3-8 from the line. Lake Region hit 48% from the field, 8-17 from three, and 18-27 from the line.

Leading five double digit scorers for the Jacks was Gilbert Carter with 20. Keouvion McCalop added 19 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks off the bench, while Jalyn Turner added 16 points and five assists. The final two in double digits were Darion Hancock with 10 points, and eight rebounds and Louis Williams with 11 points.

The Jack's fell to 14-9 overall and 0-6 in Mon-Dak play. They are next in action on Thursday when they travel north of the border to Winnipeg to face Canadian Mennonite University.

Improvements Slowly but Surely

We hosted the Wildcats of North Dakota State College of Science on Thursday evening. The first half was a back and forth affair with 12 lead changes and the Wildcats leading 39-35 at the half. A basket at the end of the half was negated that would have made it 39-37 due to a travelling call after Gilbert Carter was tripped up by the defense.

We played a much better game defensively and offensively as a team. A few changes on the offensive side of the ball as well as a more aggressive defensive game plan. For the half we shot 44% from the field and 5-10 from three. However we did struggle from the line going 2-6. NDSCS shot 40% from the field for the half.

In the second half a short miss off the first possession was missed to further cut the lead and NDSCS proceeded to go on a 19-3 run to break open the game. Three's were theme as they hit on nine of fourteen in the second half (64%) on the way to the 92-64 win.

Leading the way was Carter with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Jalyn Turner added 14 points and 6 rebounds, while Keouvion McCalop added 13 points and 8 rebounds in his new found role off the bench. He was a huge reason that we were in the game as he gave us a much needed added spark.

The Jack's played better despite the score, our offense when we ran it correctly looked better and our defensive aggression was much higher. However three's and not being able to respond to their run did us in. We will continue to improve every day and hopefully get past this hiccup. Overall we are 14-8 and 0-5 in conference play.

The Jacks travel to Devils Lake on Sunday for a 4:30 tilt with the Royals of Lake Region State College.

Men's Basketball Falls at Dawson

The Dakota College Lumberjacks travelled to Glendive, MT on Monday evening for a Mon-Dak battle with the Buccaneers of Dawson Community College. They fought gallantly in the second half of the game before falling 70-56 to DCC.

In the first half, it was a back and forth affair with neither team really taking control until late in the half. Late in the first half the Lumberjack defense stood up and were able to get 7 straight stops, trailing by 6. However, they were only able to convert on one of those to cut the lead to four. An 8-0 run late in the half upped the halftime lead to 12, 37-25. DCB struggled shooting wise at 30% from the field, and 1-11 from three. DCC shot 48% from the field, and 6-12 from three. The Bucs outscored the Jacks 23-9 combined from the three point line and the free-throw line.

The second half began much as the first ended with Dawson scoring the first five of the half to push the lead to its apex at 42-25. However, the Jack defense went back to work and they started to hit a few shots as they were able to cut the lead to as low as 4 midway thru the half but were not able to break thru due to some timely turnovers and rushed shots. They did shoot better in the second half, hitting 39% of their shots, and four threes.

Leading the way was Gilbert Carter with 21 points, including 4 three. He added 3 assists. The only other double digit scorer was Keouvion McCalop with 10 points. A bright spot was the welcomed return of Kavon Thompson who had been out since mid  - December due to a leg injury. He played 25 minutes overall and his added energy was a huge reason for the second half run.

The Jacks fell to 14-6 on the year and 0-4 in Mon-Dak play. They will pay host to NDSCS on Thursday, January 22nd at 8:00 pm.

Conference Struggles Continue

The Dakota College at Bottineau men's basketball team welcomed Williston State College to the Woodshed on January 15th. The Jacks hung tough with the Tetons for most of the 1st half, before an end of the half run gave WSC a 16 point lead at 46-30. The Jacks led for parts of the first half, but were not able to match the Tetons bucket for bucket.

The Tetons would come out in the second half and would use a mini run of 7-0 to push the lead to 23 with just over 18:00 to go. They would proceed to push the lead higher as the half went on before the final tally of 102-63 was reached. Leading the way for the Jacks was Gilbert Carter and Jalyn Turner scoring 16 each, Carter added 2 steals as well. Louis Williams scored 10 as the only other double digit scorer. For the game DCB struggled from the field hitting only 31% of their shots, including 16% from three. They were also outrebounded 53-33 for the game.

The Jacks fell to 14-5 on the year, and 0-3 in Mon-Dak play. They are back in action on Monday, January 19 when they travel to Glendive, MT to face Dawson CC.

On Monday, January 12th the Jacks traveled to Bismarck to for a key Region XIII Division II match up with United Tribes Technical College.  The Jacks again came out on the short end with a 94-91 loss. The first half was back and forth with UTTC leading the majority of the way, with a lead of 29-17 being the biggest of the half. DCB chipped away the rest of the half, with a Joe Baker layup at the buzzer cutting the lead to 57-53 at half.

In the second half there were 8 lead changes and 7 ties as both teams buckled down. UTTC led 94-91 with 15 seconds to go and the ball being in DCB's hands. The Jacks would come down and a three point shot from the corner by Pat Robinson would be off the mark sealing the Jack's fate. Turner added 18 points, while Louis Williams added 10 of his own.
